Formed in the spring of 1962, The Concords were a Surbiton-based band featuring the early talents of Keith Hank Harvey (lead guitar), Tony Stratfold (rhythm guitar), John LeHeup (vocals, percussion, and bottle), Ron Webb (vocals), John Howison (bass guitar), and Andy (Bob Anderson) on drums.

I thought there were no recordings*, their most memorable performance was a high-energy version of La Bamba, drawing shouts of 'Encore' from the audience, who were possibly trying to save themselves from other items in the band's extensive repertoire. The band was wound up at the end of the summer of 1963.

    Venues played:

Downside Village Hall, near Cobham. Possibly twice; once to an audience of nobody, so we adjourned to the Cricketers pub across the green opposite!

Upstairs at Surbiton Youth Club, 19 Langley Road, where we were warned that the audience stamping to La Bamba was about to cause the floor to collapse.

The Clive Wood Dance Studio, 12 Park Road, Hampton Wick.

The Manor Park Pavilion, New Malden/Motspur Park.

    Hook Youth Club.

Chessington Youth Centre, Church Lane, Chessington.

    Repertoire:

Apache, La Bamba, Loopy Loo, Lucille, Peggy Sue, Golden Earrings, The Storm, .....

*Martin Hatherly an early vocalist with the group, who left to join The Valiants, managed to preserve three rehearsal tracks

recorded in someone's front room. The tunes are Everyday, Do You Wanna Dance? and Take Your Time. Find them here.

Another guitar player from the other side of Kingston, Ed Wooden, offers his recollections and a photo of some of the band.

Coverage in The Surbiton Borough News.

Pictures of the group and the gear

Be re-inspired, listen to Ritchie Valens - La Bamba, The Shadows - Apache, or The Storm by The Hunters.

This memory page, one item in his Timelines project, is written by Mike Jones — The Concords' part-time roadie.
